It’s here! Oscar Sunday. While this year’s ceremonies have been rife with controversy, I will still watch the star-studded affair if for no other reason than to see the gorgeous dresses making their way down the red carpet. That alone is a prime-time event in my books.
But since today is all about the awards, I thought I would share with you my picks – and most entertainingly, my logic, for the big categories… If for no other reason than when I am right later tonight, I can say “Look! I said that earlier!” and have evidence. Because, yes, I’m petty like that.
I am only picking the big categories (who cares about best sound mixing? I sure don’t) and I’m picking who I think will win, not necessarily who I feel should win.
Oscar Sunday – Best Picture : The Big Short
Here’s how I got here. I fell asleep during Spotlight and Bridge of Spies, so those are automatically out as contenders. Keep my attention, for godssake. Brooklyn had a lead actor who was shorter than the main actress and no chemistry, not winning. Mad Max is an action movie, not going to win Best Picture at a hoity toity event like the Oscars. Leaves me with the Martian, the Big Short and the Revenant. I loved the Martian and the Big Short, hated the Revenant. And between an intellectual movie about the financial crisis and a sci-fi flick about Mars, I have to think the old white men who run the Academy will think about the money they lost in 2008 and want to stick it to the Banks. Therefore, going with the Big Short.
Oscar Sunday – Actor in a Leading Role : Leonardo DiCaprio
Can we all just please agree that we give the award to Leo so he stops doing his “deep” roles and has some fun with acting again? I don’t think he doesn’t deserve it, I mean the man slept in a fake dead horse, but I also don’t think he really truly does. I didn’t see Trumbo or the Danish Girl, but you can’t give Walter White an Oscar, and Eddie Redmayne won last year. I’m biased in my love of Jason Bourne, uh, I mean Matt Damon, so I’d be thrilled to see him win, but this is Leo’s night.
Oscar Sunday – Actress in a Leading Role : Brie Larson
I think this will go to Brie Larson. While I refused to watch Room (the premise completely creeps me out) , I did hear that she was great in the role. I think Cate Blanchett could always sweep in and prove me wrong (and oh, I hope she does, she’s going to be a best-dressed candidate FOR SURE) but otherwise, this is a lock. Saoirse had zero chemistry with her short romantic lead in Brooklyn, Jennifer Lawrence is too overrated and Charlotte Rampling made very bad comments about white discrimination at the Oscars. but oh, I do think Charlotte will be spectacularly dressed for the event today… Here’s how I styled her a couple of days ago:
Oscar Sunday – Actor in a Supporting Role : Tom Hardy
The only thing that kept me awake during the Revenant and the oh-so-long-and-overrated-fake-suffering of Leonardo DiCaprio was Tom Hardy. Wow. Christian Bale was amazing in the Big Short, but I’m already giving them the nod for best picture… The Marks were good, but not great in my opinion (and who would give the award to the Hulk?!) The Academy of old white guys also won’t give the award to Sly Stallone either. It was enough of a nod just to give him the nomination. I also styled Tom, all the way down to his underwear, because… Well… Tom Hardy in underwear.
Oscar Sunday – Actress in a Supporting Role : Jennifer Jason Leigh
Giving this one to the Hateful Eight because JJL (can I call her that? Too long to type out the rest) held her own in a cast of powerful men and did a great job interpreting the insanity that is a Quentin Tarantino movie. The rest of the actresses in this category weren’t all that bad either – in fact, I’d love to see Rachel McAdams win as I love her – but I think this one is going to JJL for holding her own in a bloody, violent Tarantino movie.
Other highlight I’m looking forward to? Seeing Julianne Moore (I heart Julianne Moore)! And maybe we’ll see Aaron Rodgers accompany Olivia Munn on the red carpet?
Also, Chrissy Teigen slayed at the Oscars pre-party last night. Makes me want to just cut my v-necks all deep and show off my belly too, Chrissy.
