On any average day, I can be in and out of the shower in about 5 minutes. This includes washing and conditioning hair, a whirl of the Clarisonic as well as a few quick passes of the razor to avoid turning into a wildebeest. It’s quite impressive and I like to think that even though I’ve been doing it almost daily for more years than I care to admit, it’s an achievement in and of itself. My hair will be clean, and my legs will be shaven so that if I fall and break my ankle, I won’t need to be ashamed to show the handsome doctor my open fracture (True story). Admittedly though, like most things in life, doing a half-assed job will only get you so far.
This is where I like to insert the 15-20 minute shower when I have the time. The shower that will allow a deep conditioning treatment, face and body scrubs and exfoliators – and proper shaving of the legs. You know, the pre-date warmup. After a conversation with a friend the other day, I realized that I’m one of the few people who have two completely different leg shaving routines. One to just shave them and one to really shave them. Ladies, I am going to share with you my secrets to getting legs as soft as a baby’s bottom.
Step 1: Make sure the shower is warm enough to produce some steam. Much like a facial, the heat helps the pores open up and the hair rises out of the pores a little bit, meaning you’ll be able to get more of the hair off.
Step 2: Exfoliate your legs. Because the skin on the legs is much tougher than the skin on the face, you can really use a gritty scrub to really slough off dead skin which will otherwise get stuck in your razor’s blades. Make sure at this stage that you’re not using a body scrub with any oils in it as it will leave a residue which will not be conducive to close shaving. Wash off all of the grit to make sure it doesn’t get lodged in your razor. If you’re lucky enough to live with a man who takes his shaving seriously, you could also rub a few drops of his pre-shave oil onto your legs at this point – it helps prevents nicks, cuts and irritation.
Step 3: Lather up! Make sure you’re using a moisturizing shaving cream (like this one from Kiehl’s) and take your time removing the hair against the grain. This means since your leg hair typically grows down that you want to ideally be working from the ankle upwards. When this is done, remove all of the cream and repeat. Yes, I said repeat – that was the first pass and now you go back around again. This makes sure you catch any of the stray hairs staying around, patches you may have missed or areas where the lather prevented the razor previously from getting a close shave.
Step 4: You’ll want to exfoliate again to make sure your legs are as smooth as can be. This is when I like to use some of the newer body scrubs that have moisturizing oils in them so your legs have an extra layer of softness built in, my personal favourite being the Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish.

There are all kinds of different tips and tricks that I’ve read about to get the smoothest legs, and this is by no means the only way to do so – but it’s definitely my tried and true way to get legs suitable for those hot dates, days at the beach or just quite frankly feeling like a million bucks.
